You check the email before sending, read it again afterwards and replay the meeting on the way home. When every task feels like a test, starting or finishing can become difficult.

Recognise the pressure behind the delay

Sometimes the obstacle is not a lack of effort. It is the demand that the work must be flawless before anyone can see it. Notice whether you are delaying a practical task or avoiding the possibility of criticism.

Make the first step smaller

Separate beginning from finishing. Write a rough paragraph, outline the decision or prepare one part of the task. Decide what this first pass needs to achieve before you start refining it.

Set a stopping point

Choose the checks that matter for the task and a reasonable point to stop. When you want to check again, ask what specific information another check would add.

Reflect on the attempt

Notice what you completed, what you learned and one adjustment for next time. You can care about your work while leaving room for an imperfect first attempt.
